Congressman Jerry Lewis

The first in a multi-part series discussing the follies of Congressman Jerry Lewis during his 32-year tenure as the 41st District’s representative in the House of Representatives will begin on Friday, September 24, 2010.  Part Two will be published the following Wednesday.

The Wall Street Journal gave Congressman Lewis the title of “Minority Maker” in 2006.  He earned that title due to his roll as chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee when Republicans raised the  national deficit by hundreds of billions of dollars with out-of-control pork barrel spending, causing the party to lose the house majority.

Lewis has become a controversial figure, often taking moderate and  even sometimes liberal positions while portraying himself as a conservative Republican in a mostly conservative district.  In recent years Lewis has been embroiled in scandal and turmoil.  But in reality scandal and turmoil have followed Lewis throughout his career, kept well hidden during a time when the Internet and 24-hour cable news did not exist.

Join us on Friday as we discuss decades of little-known facts and examine the career of one of our nation’s most powerful congressmen.
